My quick guide to packing

So captain, we plan to save time, protect our belongings and nerves too! With this out of the way, I present you with some great hacks for packing so that this lengthy process will shrink considerably.

  1. Keep those drawers full.
Benefit from the space you have, as your drawer is already a big storing container for your stuff; do not empty it! Take the drawers out of the dresser, with all your things in it, and secure it with plastic wrap. You can also wrap the entire dresser as it is, with all your stuff in the drawers, if, of course, the weight allows you to.
  2. Clothes may stay on the hanger.
Keep your clothes on their hangers and collect them in big garbage bags – a trick I’ve learned when moving. It saves the time, space, and effort required for folding each garment individually.
  3. Any soft item might be put to use.
Towels can be used to wrap breakable things like lamps, vases, or mirrors, while glasses or perfume bottles can be wrapped in socks. Yes, in socks. It doesn’t only work for fragile objects, but also sharp ones like forks and knives, for example.
  4. Use pots to hold small items.
Do you know the Russian matryoshka doll? Well, any pot in your house can be used as a container for other pots and things. More minor things go into bigger things, and you save a lot of space. You also are eco-friendly, as you don’t waste additional boxes and packing paper for the things you put in other pots.
  5. Avoid spills with wrapping.
Almost any spill can be prevented if you wrap some plastic wrap around the lids of the items concerned. Such include soaps, shampoos, cleaning supplies, skincare items, and other things you don’t want to waste, as well as don’t wish to be poured all over your other belongings while in transit.
  6. Use all your suitcases.
Suitcases have wheels. It means – exactly, it’s much easier to carry heavier things in them. So when packing harder to transport items, consider opting for all your existing suitcases.
  7. Color code boxes.
Labeling boxes are handy, but to dip further into this hack – use different colored paper or stickers to mark each room and pack accordingly. You will know exactly which box is for the bedroom items or the bathroom supplies.
  8. Photograph the contents of your boxes.
Memory can betray anyone, so taking a picture of the things you put in each of your boxes will be of much-needed help. You might not be able to capture every single object, but it will still refresh your memory when wondering where you have put each thing.
  9. Take a picture of the back of your TV.
Many of us don’t have the instructions for our TVs on hand, and frankly, many forget the exact place each wire goes. So while your TV is still connected and all the cables are plugged in, photograph the back of your TV. It will give you a visible example of how your TV should be connected when you’ve already relocated.
  10. Don’t forget your moving essentials bag!
You should have on hand a duffle bag with essentials. This way, you will have direct access to documents, chargers, water, medications, essential hygiene products, etc., while on the way to your new home.

Don’t know what a “Bill of Landing” is?  Let me explain

You sign a contract with your mover. This contract is your Bill of Landing.
Why do you sign such papers?
Because the law requires each moving company to put together a bill of landing for each transported cargo, it has to have the same information on service. You will receive a copy of this document from your moving driver.
In case you don’t, ask for it!

  • Remember that it is your responsibility as a customer to attentively read the Bill of Landing before signing it. It contains the information about the services your mover has to provide to you, and the amount you have to pay for them, respectively.
  • Do not underestimate the importance of this document. I mean that you have to be careful to have your copy of the bill on hand until the moving process is finished and you paid all the costs. Try not to lose it.

There are minimum weight or volume charges for each shipment

Each moving company has a minimum weight or volume charge that usually represents the cost for shipping loads weighing at least 1,000 pounds (454 kilograms). There can be situations in which your shipment might consider less than your mover’s minimum weight. In such cases, ask your moving company to advise you of the minimum cost before accepting to carry your shipment. If your moving company fails to do so, you should be charged according to the weight of your load, opposed to the minimum weight charges.

Should you purchase extra insurance?

When moving from Barrie to Vancouver, you can buy moving insurance, besides your valuation coverage. Valuation coverage might not compensate you for all the losses if any of your precious belongings get damaged.
It is why I would recommend investing in additional insurance when you move expensive and valuable items. This is also why many customers opt for insuring through third-party insurance companies. Your goods will be covered for up to 3 months while being transported or stored under the policies of our moving insurance.

What does moving insurance cover?

Usually, each policy has its details, so the amount of coverage from your insurance might vary. As a bigger picture, most moving insurances cover all types of item damage while transporting or storing, from natural disasters to any minor accident. I would recommend asking your moving company to explain how moving insurance works.

Does your homeowner’s policy cover the move?

Some people think that homeowners insurance (or renting) is able to cover all their belongings while relocating. If you are one of them, there’s a big chance you might be wrong. To make sure you’ve got all the correct information, contact your insurance agent. Policies broadly vary, some insure your goods only while they’re being packed in your home, so it is better to know in advance.

Let me explain what self-storage is and how it works

Sometimes when moving from Barrie to Vancouver, you will need to store some of your items; this is when self-storage units prove helpful. These facilities are a convenient option, as they offer different size units and other services to ensure the safety of your belongings. You will be responsible for transporting your items to the storage unit, as well as picking them up when you will need them. The rest is on the storage unit workers! There are also special self-storage units that can store substantial items, like boats and RVs. All our moving members may help you with your storage needs.

Don’t forget that not anything can be stored in such units!

I want to show you the limits to what you cannot store in a self-storage unit. And it is understandable, as it consists of dangerous and flammable items. The things you can’t keep include:

  • fireworks,
  • explosives,
  • chemicals,
  • fertilizers,
  • paint,
  • gasoline,
  • narcotics and
  • propane tanks.

You are not allowed to store:

  • animals,
  • food,
  • plants, and
  • drugs as well.

Ask your moving company about all the rules and restrictions before packing boxes for storage. It should not be an issue, as usually there is a list of things you cannot store.

Be sure to know your rights and responsibilities when moving from Barrie to Vancouver

When moving to Vancouver, you will be given a brochure by your mover to state your rights and responsibilities clearly. You ship all your household items, so this is no joke. You will also be given another one that tells you how your complaints might be handled at your new place.

Some notes on extra charges

It’s not news that moving companies provide different price and service options, and you are free to choose whichever you need. Keep in mind that each additional service means a more significant number on your final bill. You have to be aware of every additional moving service if there is any, and about its costs, before making your move with a particular company. Remember, there are always other options without the extra charges; this is why it’s essential to be informed and approach your moving cautiously.
